Epidemiological Context

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary etiological driver of cervical, vulvar, vaginal, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal malignancies, alongside anogenital warts.
India accounts for approximately 25% of global cervical cancer deaths, with over 1,20,000 new cases and nearly 80,000 deaths annually.
The nationwide immunization campaign, launched in February 2026, aims to shift cervical cancer from an oncology burden to a preventable infectious disease, aligning with the World Health Organization (WHO) 90-70-90 elimination threshold.

HPV vaccines contain virus-like particles (VLPs) of the major capsid L1 protein produced via recombinant DNA technology.
